How the MLB standings work
The 30 teams are split into the American League and the National League, and each league into three divisions of five. Every team plays 162 regular-season games, the longest schedule of the major US sports.
Division winners and wild cards
The three division winners in each league take seeds one to three, ordered by record. The three best remaining teams are the wild cards. Diff is run differential, the runs a team has scored minus the runs it has allowed.
Standings and betting
Baseball results swing more from game to game than in most sports, mostly because of the starting pitcher. Bookmakers price each game largely on who is pitching, which a season table does not show.
