How the NHL standings work

The 32 teams are split into two conferences of 16, and each plays 82 regular-season games. Teams are ranked by points, with games played shown next to them, because early in the season a team with games in hand can sit lower than its form suggests.

Playoff places

The top three teams in each division qualify, plus the two best remaining teams in each conference as wild cards. The table here is ordered by current playoff position within each conference.

Standings and betting

Hockey has more close games than most sports, and overtime is common. A team with many overtime losses picks up points without winning, so its record can look better than its results in regular time.
