How the NBA standings work

The 30 teams are split into two conferences of 15, and each plays 82 regular-season games. Teams are ranked inside their own conference by winning percentage, which is why the table here is shown conference by conference rather than as one list.

Playoffs and the play-in

The first six in each conference qualify for the playoffs directly. Seventh to tenth go to the play-in tournament: seventh plays eighth, with the winner taking the seventh seed, and the loser plays the winner of ninth against tenth for the eighth seed.

Standings and betting

Early in the season a table can mislead, because a few games against strong or weak opponents move a team a long way. Bookmakers price games on much more than the record, such as injuries, rest days and back-to-back games.
